The importance of keeping teeth clean and healthy has been revealed by a new study which shows a link between oral bacteria and pneumonia.
According to a report by the lead author Dr Samit Joshi of Yale University School of Medicine, changes in bacteria in the mouth preceded the development of pneumonia, which affects hundreds of thousands of people in the UK.
Chief executive of the British Dental Health Federation Dr Nigel Carter stated good oral health can help to stave off illness, especially during the winter months.
He said “simply brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste” can enable people to reduce their chances of getting ill.
New figures show oral health is a particular problem in Yorkshire, as the northern county’s children are affected by tooth decay seven times as much as kids in other parts of the UK, the Yorkshire Post reported.
