Having a nice smile has topped the list of features which attract us to a partner, a survey has shown.
The results of the survey, which was carried out by the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF), showed that caring for your teeth can have a massive impact when trying to impress a date.
More than half of those who answered the survey (56 per cent) rated a smile as the most important physical feature, while 53 per cent said face and 51 per cent of respondents said that the eyes were the most alluring attribute.
Also measured in the survey were dress sense, body shape, hair and height. However, none of these features came close to matching the attractiveness of a smile.
Chief executive of BDHF Dr Nigel Carter believes that having a winning smile can make all the difference when trying to get a date. He said it can make people feel at ease as well as be a powerful show of emotion which can “prove remarkably attractive to the opposite sex”.
Dr Carter said that the survey was a reminder to people to spend less time worrying about their clothes and hair when getting ready for a date. Instead, people should invest more time in caring for their teeth.
“The survey is a great reminder that we should be giving greater attention to our teeth – not just because it improves oral health, but because it gives us the confidence to smile, which makes a major difference to our relationships,” Dr Carter said.
The results of the BDHF survey are further compounded by dating website Match.com, whose survey into how we measure attractiveness also showed that single people pay more attention to teeth than other physical features.
It showed that 58 per cent of men find good teeth and a nice smile the most beautiful physical asset, and a greater number of women, 78 per cent, agreed.
We all want to be loved so this news should go a long way to inspiring patients to take better care of their oral health.
