University Hospital Birmingham consultant Bernie Speculand has been appointed the new chair of the British Dental Association’s (BDA’s) Central Committee for Hospital Dental Services (CCHDS).
Dr Speculand, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, will take the role for the next three years.
The specialist, who also holds consultant posts at Birmingham Dental Hospital and at City Hospital, stated it is a “great honour” to have been picked for the position.
“The profession is currently facing significant challenges, not least the uncertainty surrounding the implementation of the new Health and Social Care Act, the erosion of pensions and critically, a reduction in NHS funding,” he said, adding it is a key time for the sector.
Dr Speculand will be supported by new CCHDS vice-chair Bill Ipp, who is consultant orthodontist at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals.
The two main objectives of the CCHDS are to link dental staff with those negotiating their terms of service and to provide the BDA with advice on the enhancement of oral health services.
