The General Dental Council (GDC) has issued a reminder about the rules regarding tooth whitening treatments, in information that could be included in dental marketing campaigns.
It pointed out only dentists, dental hygienists or dental therapists who are working to a dentist’s prescription are registered to carry out such work.
The organisation also insisted any patients considering having their teeth whitened are made aware of what they can expect.
“Tooth whitening can improve the appearance of natural teeth,” noted the GDC, which added dental patients also should be told about how the work is carried out.
The GCD also pointed out it will continue to prosecute individuals who undertake tooth whitening without being properly registered, with two cases brought to criminal courts in the last 12 months.
Professor Robin Seymour, a leading periodontologist and advisor to Dentyl Active, the leading alcohol free mouthwash you can see working, recently noted tooth whitening should only be carried out by a qualified professional.
