Employers issued with trainee dental nurses guidance

The General Dental Council (GDC) has updated its guidance for employers giving jobs to trainee dental nurses or dental technicians.
It was noted by the body that its previous guidance in this area was put in place during the transitional period for dental care professionals, which ran from the end of July 2006 to the end of August 2008.
This meant they could register with the GDC without having a formal qualification and the body has since reviewed what is meant by the term ‘in-training’.
“Anyone employing trainee or student dental nurses or dental technicians should make themselves familiar with [the guidance],” said a statement from the GDC.
Key points included in the guidance include a definition of a trainee dental nurse or dental technician, which says this covers anyone who is employed and enrolled or waiting to start on a recognised programme that will lead to registration with the GDC.
The GDC is responsible for the regulation of all dental professionals in the UK, from dentists to orthodontic therapists.
