Teeth can be kept looking white by keeping away from cola and hard sweets, as well as giving up smoking, according to the British Dental Health Federation.
In information that could be included in dental marketing campaigns, Karen Coates, dental advisor at the body, advised individuals to also reduce their consumption of highly coloured food and drink, such as curries, red wine, tea or coffee.
But she warned those who may be tempted by a home teeth whitening kit in a bid to make their grin more attractive that the procedure should only be carried out by a professional.
Ms Coates said: “Because tooth whitening is a complicated procedure the Foundation would advise that you always consult your dentist prior to undertaking treatment.”
This comes shortly after Wake Forest Baptist Health oral health professionals and the American Dental Hygienists Association pointed out some people may experience sensitivity if they whiten their teeth at home.
