A new study has highlighted the importance of people brushing their teeth every day, as it has been found this could reduce the chances of them developing heart disease in the future.
Scientists presenting their work at the Society for General Microbiology’s Spring Conference in Dublin announced oral bacteria that escape into the bloodstream are able to cause blood clots.
Researchers from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and the University of Bristol in England revealed the unwanted blood clots encase the bacteria, which has the impact of protecting them from the immune system and from antibiotics that might be used to treat infection.
Dr Helen Petersen, who is presenting the work, called for better understanding of the relationship between bacteria and platelets, adding: “We are now looking at the mechanism behind this sequence of events in the hope that we can develop new drugs which are needed to prevent blood clots and also infective endocarditis.”
A source recently told the Daily Star that singer Katy Perry brushes her teeth six times a day.
