Beautician prosecuted by GDC over tooth whitening

Posted by Allie Wright

The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced it has prosecuted a beautician for offering tooth whitening services, as these should only be carried out by dental professionals.

Elaine Taylor-Valles of Merseyside faced two charges at Preston Magistrates’ Court after it was alleged that she unlawfully practised dentistry by carrying out tooth whitening at Lord Street in Southport without being registered with the GDC.

She was also accused of unlawfully carrying out the business of dentistry when she is not entitled to do so contrary to the Dentists Act 1984, noted the GDC in a statement.

“The GDC investigated after receiving a complaint from a member of the public about the manner in which her teeth had been whitened,” the body added.

Anyone considering having their teeth whitening ought to go to their dentist for advice, it said.

The procedure is popular among celebrities and one such famous face to have admitted having their teeth whitened is comedian John Bishop.
