BDHF backs plain tobacco packaging proposals

UK government proposals to ensure all tobacco products are sold in plain packaging are being supported by the British Dental Health Foundation.
It was noted by the body that the Australian High Court has given the go-ahead to plans to introduce the plain packets and the UK will consult in similar proposals shortly.
Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the foundation, stated it is a “landmark” ruling that has taken place in Australia and it will have sent a message to the coalition government in the UK.
“Tobacco and cigarette smoking are one of the main contributing factors of mouth cancer. This year more people will die of this dreadful disease than all of those who die from cervical and testicular cancer combined,” he said.
Tooth staining, gum disease and tooth loss have also been shown to be caused by smoking, it was noted by the oral health specialist.
Recent research showed both men and women are more attracted to potential partners with white smiles than those with stained teeth.
