BDA calls for end to illegal teeth whitening

The practice of illegal teeth whitening must be brought to an end, the British Dental Association (BDA) has stated.
It has called for dentists, Trading Standards officials and the General Dental Council (GDC) to work together to prevent the illegal practice.
The call coincides with the implementation of the European Council’s Directive on Tooth Whitening Products in the UK, which comes today (October 31st).
Dr Stuart Johnston, a member of the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee and chair of the Council of European Dentists’ working group on whitening products, said this is a chance for a new era of patient safety relating to teeth whitening.
“Dentists must be diligent in reporting any non-dentists performing whitening and Trading Standards and the GDC must put safety first and take action to protect the public,” he said.
Cosmetic dentist Dr Maurice Johannes, from The Harley Street Smile Clinic, recently said teeth whitening is more popular than ever in the UK.
